Bob recorded "Duppy Conqueror" in the late 1960s, shortly after being released by Kingston police following a minor ganja arrest, in which he paraphrased the traditional Jamaican street saw used when defying a bully: "If yuh bullbucker, me duppy conqueror."

If any bad forces come to test us, we can conquer them even at a spiritual level: we're even hard spiritually.
